Donald Trump says the ‘Spygate’ conspiracy which alleges that FBI and Department of Justice moles secretly worked against him is a historic scandal. He tweeted Wednesday: ‘SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!’
The dramatic post came after a series of tweets alleging that a ‘Criminal Deep State’ infiltrated his 2016 presidential campaign to try and ensure his rival Hillary Clinton won. Trump wrote: ‘If the person placed very early into my campaign wasn’t a SPY put there by the previous Administration for political purposes, how come such a seemingly massive amount of money was paid for services rendered – many times higher than normal…
‘…Follow the money! The spy was there early in the campaign and yet never reported Collusion with Russia, because there was no Collusion.
‘He was only there to spy for political reasons and to help Crooked Hillary win – just like they did to Bernie Sanders, who got duped!’ In another tweet, he continued: ‘Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State. ‘They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! ‘What goes around, comes around!’
The president then tweeted a quote from legal expert Judge called Andrew Napolitano – who appears as an analyst on Fox News – who said: ‘It’s clear that they had eyes and ears all over the Trump Campaign’. He also hit out at former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper in a final missive, writing: ‘“Trump should be happy that the FBI was SPYING on his campaign” No, James Clapper, I am not happy.
‘Spying on a campaign would be illegal, and a scandal to boot!’ Trump has pushed Spygate since the New York Times and Washington Post – newspapers he normally discredits – reported that the Bureau planted a mole to make contact with Team Trump workers. Both publications allege that the FBI took this step after being tipped off that some members of the campaign group had suspicious contacts with Russia during the 2016 election.
Trump has denied any collusion with Russia. His critics say he has seized on the Spygate scandal in a bid to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing probe into Russian interference. They claim the president and his advisers are unnerved by Mueller’s thoroughness, and the lack of leaks emerging from his probe, amid speculation about what he may uncover.
