Jose Mourinho rips into Manchester United forwards after defeat to Brighton

Jose Mourinho slammed the performances of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial following Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton. Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were out with injuries as the Red Devils travelled to Falmer Stadium and Mourinho opted to start Rashford and Martial up front against Chris Hughton’s men.

The Portuguese was visibly unhappy as Rashford wasted a chance in the first-half for United and Pascal Gross went on to score the winner for Brighton in the 57th minute. Lukaku has been United’s most used forward this season and Mourinho used the Belgian to criticise Rashford and Martial in the aftermath of Friday night’s defeat.

‘I wouldn’t say disappointed, because I know them. I thought for some the possibility to start a game, to give reason to the ones who criticise my choices,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘”Why always Lukaku?” Now you have your answer to “Why always Lukaku?” We are not as good as individually as people think we are.’

Mourinho made six changes to the team which beat Arsenal and he questioned the players that came in at Falmer Stadium. ‘The players who replaced others didn’t perform at a good level and when individuals don’t perform at a good level it’s difficult for the team to play at good level,’ he said.

‘And now maybe you understand why some players playe more than other and you won’t ask all the time why A, B and C don’t play more.

‘My players if you ask them they will tell you I told them what was going to happen and at half-time. I knew it and I told them but that’s what we got . ‘Of course there was a positive reaction in last 20 minutes but that’s normal.’
