Arsenal have placed Mikel Arteta’s name on the top of a four-man shortlist to replace Arsene Wenger ahead of the Frenchman’s imminent departure at the end of the season.
The Spaniard spent five seasons as a player at the London club before calling it quits and hanging up his boots for good at the end of the 2016 campaign. Since his retirement, he’s taken up a pivotal role in Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff at Manchester City and the club are said to keen on keeping him there.
However, the Gunners are seeking a successor to Wenger and have highlighted Arteta as their prime candidate to take over the managerial helm. According to Manchester Evening News, Arteta is joined on the list with current Juventus manager Max Allegri and former Barca coach Luis Enrique.
The fourth candidate is believed to be 1899 Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann, but the German only signed a contract extension to remain at the Bundesliga club until 2021 back in June.
