Arsenal have completed the signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund. The Greek centre-half becomes new manager Unai Emery’s third signing of the summer after the free transfer of experienced Switzerland captain Stephan Lichsteiner and goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Papastathopoulos, 29, has been a regular fixture at the heart of Dortmund’s defence for the past four years but the Bundesliga giants couldn’t turn down such a fee.
Arsenal will pay a fee believed to be in the region of £17million for a player who was identified by Sven Mislintat. The club’s head of recruitment has now played a part in the signing of three former Dortmund players following the January arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Sokratis will wear the no.5 shirt for the Gunners and Arsenal have referred to his contract as ‘long-term’ in their statement. Emery is keen to tie Calum Chambers down to a new long-term deal after the retirement of Per Mertesacker and the Spaniard will be without Laurent Koscielny until 2019.
