If You Do These 5 Things, Your Relationship Will Last No Matter The Distance

By Sheehan Belleca

There are so many overlooked ways of making a relationship work despite the distance and time differences. It is possible to balance work, studies, family time, me-time, your relationship and other things that matter to you if you have a clear understanding of what you and your partner’s capabilities and limitations are.

Here we go:

1. It’s a must to have honest and genuine communication.

It’s not about being able to say anything the person wants to hear. It’s highly important to mean what you say even though you can’t talk to each other every single day. Make sure to put your heart in every word that comes out of you because in a long distance relationship it’s mostly the words you can hold onto. Know that this is where a strong trust between one another springs.

2. Have a deeper understanding of each other’s personal lives and current situation.

Just a reminder that you won’t fully know everything about them. This challenges your relationship and how well you know each other. Is that possible? It is, most of the time. For example, if you understand that your partner works a strenuous job, you’ll understand why he couldn’t stay longer on the phone to talk with you. Most of the time it’s that simple. You just have to rely on your faith in each other. And also, speak out to be understood. You can’t play guessing games here.

3. Also make mutual decisions on how you plan to make your relationship work despite time differences.

Does telling each other’s schedule work for the both of you? If yes, that’s the easiest way to understand where each other is coming from. Some may find it controlling in a way that irks other people but honestly, it helps. Knowing each other’s schedule is like shooting your partner a how are you doing message just like in a normal relationship. Since you can’t do it in an LDR due to time difference, it gives the both of you a relief knowing that you are safe and doing okay.

4. Long distance relationship have a lot of compromises.

You don’t necessarily have to sacrifice every single thing for your relationship to work. You don’t have to give up yourself all the time. But as the saying goes, “If you want to, you’ll find a way. If you don’t want to, there are so many reasons to say.” Normally, in a long distance relationship, sleep is the number one on the list to always sacrifice. Sometimes, you have to wake up early or stay up a little longer just to have a proper conversation with your partner. At the end of the day, it all goes back to number 3.

5. Know your own priorities and learn how to manage your time.

When you’re in this kind of relationship, you may stray away from one of your priorities by putting so much focus on the other. It greatly helps to have a monthly calendar to list down your activities that are highly important to keep track if you’re able to balance your everyday priorities. You may also include monthly highlights of your partner’s schedule (with his consent of course, see number 3) to see if your free time matches.

In the end, there’s so much to say. This list could go on forever. But personally, it’s a matter of mastering how to manage your priorities and time really well. This kind of relationship is hard work, but nothing is impossible if you have a great partner to team up with you. TC mark
