Gary Neville has called Virgil van Dijk’s ‘outstanding’ performance ‘a joke’ in Liverpool’s goalless draw against Everton and insists Jurgen Klopp’s side should be positive about their recent results. Liverpool are now a point behind Manchester City in the title race with nine Premier League fixtures remaining.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, registered a sublime performance at Goodison Park on Sunday but Liverpool were unable to find a way past their Merseyside rivals at the other end. And Neville believes Liverpool’s five-game run of clean sheets in all competitions stands puts them in a good position ahead of the title run-in. ‘I thought Van Dijk’s performance was a joke,’ Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast. ‘He was absolutely outstanding.
‘The thing that worried me a couple of weeks ago has subsided a little bit for Liverpool ‘I thought in the West Ham game and the Leicester City game they looked scabby at the back. ‘And that was a real worry if you are a Liverpool fan if you start to concede chances and look a bit scruffy that would start to be a problem.
‘But they’ve got control back this week. This could be a big week for Liverpool. ‘Three clean sheets, the clean sheet against Bayern Munich, four clean sheets on the bounce, they could look back on these 10 days while others are looking at it with disappointment, as a week where they actually retained control of what they were doing for the rest of the season. ‘Because the fixtures are good, they are better than City’s.’
