Jose Mourinho has asked Manchester United’s hierarchy to sign Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports. Mourinho was desperate to land a new central defender in the summer and had targeted Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
But United chiefs refused to meet Mourinho’s request having already signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof during the Portuguese’s time at Old Trafford. According to the Daily Record, Mourinho is still intent on bolstering his defensive options and has continued to demand a new centre-back.
And the United manager is said to have specifically requested the signing of Koulibaly. The 27-year-old has established himself at the heart of Napoli’s defence with his impressive performances and has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
Napoli reportedly value the Senegal international, who has over four years left on his contract, at £88 million. United, meanwhile, must offload one of their central defenders before considering a new signing and Marcos Rojo or Phil Jones could be the two who could make way in January.
