Jose Mourinho will drop his interest in two long-term Manchester United targets if he manages to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this month. The Arsenal forward appears destined to leave the north London club in January having entered the final six months of his current contract.
Sanchez came close to joining Manchester City in the summer but remained in north London with the Gunners unable to tempt Thomas Lemar into leaving Monaco. City have revived their interest despite holding a huge 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League but are unwilling to meet Arsenal’s £35million valuation which has allowed their local rivals the chance to swoop in at the last minute.
Mourinho had identified Gareth Bale and Antoine Griezmann as his two box office summer transfer targets but will abandon any though of signing two players who have been on United’s radar for a number of years, should he complete and audacious move for the former Barcelona star.
United are willing to offer Sanchez a staggering £350,000-a-week to move to Old Trafford, a salary that would make him the best paid player in England and are said to be increasingly confidence of securing his services. ‘If there is a fantastic opportunity on the table, you fight for that fantastic opportunity,’ said Mourinho on the chances of signing Sanchez ahead of Monday’s Premier League match against Stoke
‘Normally we would try to improve our squad in the summer and try to make every department stronger. If you do something now, we don’t do it in again in the summer. ‘Let’s say in the summer we have three targets – a defender, a midfielder and an attacking player. If in the winter you do one of the three, then in the summer you do three minus one.’
