Kylian Mbappe has claimed that Arsene Wenger was gracious in defeat when he decided to turn down a move to Arsenal. Wenger’s admiration for Mbappe has been well documented and the former Arsenal manager revealed last year that he even visited the forward’s house in an attempt to sign him when he was still a Monaco player.
Mbappe ended up joining Paris Saint-Germain in a €180million (£160m) deal and the French sensation has since scored 35 goals in 59 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants. The 19-year-old World Cup winner lifted the first ever Trophee Kopa award on Monday night and explained Wenger’s reaction to his decision to join PSG.
Asked about Wenger, Mbappe told France Football: ‘He is a real French football monument who has left Arsenal. ‘I have not seen many people in this world being viewed in such a unanimous way.
‘When the entirety of Europe gets on its knees in front of him to celebrate him, that certainly means something. ‘A little while ago, before I signed for PSG, we were in contact in 2017. I chose a different direction but he wasn’t annoyed at me. ‘He was a gentleman about it and wished me good luck.
